Cape Blanco Oregon Horse Camp
66
We recently took a trip to the Oregon Coast with our horses for an overnight campout at Cape Blanco Horse Camp. This horse camp is part of the Cape Blanco State Park near Port Orford, Oregon. There are 8 campsites with 4 double horse corrals.
Cape Blanco is the westernmost point in the 48 states and probably the windiest! Wind gusts up to 184 mph have twisted and battered the Sitka spruces along the 6-mile road from Hwy 101 to the Cape Blanco Lighthouse. The horse camp is located on a hill above the ocean and is sheltered by lots of Sitka Spruce trees, which protect the campsites from much of the wind.
Cape Blanco State Park was originally a ranch that was owned by the Hughes family for 111 years. The 1,800-acre park contains the historic Hughes house and the family cemetery, hiking trails, beach access, a campground with fifty-eight electric campsites, and a horse camp with riding trails. The Cape Blanco Lighthouse is the southernmost light on the Oregon Coast.
There is a 150-acre open riding area next to the horse camp and 7 miles of trails to ride. The views of the Pacific Coastline are unbelievable!

If you want to reserve a horse campsite you can call 1-800-452-5687. It isn't usually very busy, but if you are traveling to get there, you may want to reserve a spot, just to make sure!
We enjoyed our stay at Cape Blanco Horse Camp - but the riding area is limited, so a short stay worked well for us, and we'll definitely go back for more! There are a lot of other things to do there, too. You can tour the historic Hughes House, go to the lighthouse (what a view from there! The lighthouse stands 245 feet above the ocean), hike, ride bikes, bird watching, whale watching, etc.
